Horse Racing In Singapore – Singapore Horse Racing Started In 1843

The First Race was held in 1843 Feb 23rd by Singapore Sporting Club.

The prize money was then $150 and race only by the European community. The locals joined in to watch the races at the far side of the track, which was at Farrer Park junction from Bukit Timah Road.

In 1933 the racecourse was relocated to Bukit Timah Racecourse and the Singapore Sporting Club was renamed to Singapore Turf Club 9 years prior to the relocation.

The interest and the popularity grew during that time till today. The Bukit Timah Racecourse is where I begin in 1988. I witness the standard of horses grew from time to time. The era of  famous Ivan Alan and Malcolm Thwaites  Singapore’s premier horse trainer. Trainer Teh Choon Beng from Penang, Malaysia was also in the top category of the industry during that time.

Singapore Racecourse relocate to its present location in Kranji in 1999. The current racecourse hold races almost every Friday for night races and Sunday for day races. Many top notch trainers from Australia, New Zealand and other part of the world came to Singapore and started training here. There is more than 1000 horses in Singapore now. The number of trainers also grew to 26 now.

History was created and records was broken indicating the ever increasing standard of Singapore Racing. J Saimee created history when Ouzo ridden by him won the year 2000 Singapore Airlines International Cup. The eight times Singapore champion jockey perfect ride beat highly rated Hong Kong’s Champion, Jim and Tonic.

2009 Brazillian jockey Joao Moreira started riding in Singapore. He shoots to fame in 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013 as he was crowned champion jockey.

Horse Racing Stakes paid to winning owners, have been very attractive and this will benefit owners and the industry. The minimum Stakes money is $35,000 for lower grades horses and highest of S$3 Million for a once a year Singapore Airlines G1 International Cup.
