THE 4 TYPES OF THOROUGHBRED HORSES YOU CAN BUY FOR SINGAPORE RACING.

THE 4 TYPES OF THOROUGHBRED HORSES YOU CAN BUY FOR SINGAPORE RACING.

My interest to owning races horse started since forever I can remember. The first time I saw a race horse owner taking photos at the winners circle, from there I said to myself, I want to be a race horse owner. I remember I was young. That is when I saw the joy of winning, the proud horse owners standing tall at the photo taking session. It was it the former turf club in Bukit Timah, now they change its use to car dealers show room, shopping mall, hyper super markets, sports training pitches, restaurants and other similar businesses. They rename the place to Turf City.

As racehorse owners, a unique, special group of people in the horse racing business have one thing in common is that they adventurers, they have fun and loves to win.To experience the thrill and victory adrenaline joy when you are watching your horse hitting the front in a stylish way beating other contenders in a race, is overwhelmingly a beautiful feeling. You too can own that feeling, that kind of undeniable thrill, provided you have the extra funds for this expensive hobby. There’s a few ways to own a race horse in Singapore. I am sharing you some ways I have taken and also generally people who buy race horses and race in Singapore.

Firstly – Decide how much money I  can put aside for this? The annual cost of training and upkeep of the wonderful creature now (2019) is around $30,000. That is a must ‘go’ funds every year for a person owning a racehorse as a sole ownership. So your number one consideration is this, in simple terms it is called your budget.

Buying race horses for Singapore can be a lifetime thing if you always can afford it and having the love to horses. Many do it for different reasons, some for status, some did for the thrill, some did it as an investment, and probably some having the drive to own champions. But one thing for sure is owning and maintaining race horse in Singapore is costly. But many still like to own racehorse as it is exciting, fun, and sometimes profitable for some

I will talk about sole ownership first, means you have to bear the total cost, everything. You pay directly to horse trainers and discus mostly with your choice trainer.

The advantage of this kind of ownership is that you got the full control, the choice is your totally. Naming the horse, choosing the racing silk colours, the stable name, the trainer, the jockey you like to nominate for training and racing itself. This can be costly but if given the choice, I prefer to be a sole owner. And that I have been since more than 20 years involving as a horse owner. If future I may look into shared ownership, probably to be part owner of horses I buy for my friends.

This type of shared ownership is generally called syndication. Some owners opt for syndication ownership, which  is not too much stressed on the affairs of owning a race horse. Generally the share is sold in percentage and blocks of 5% to 10% each share. Each share of 5% share can cost an average from $2000 to $10,000 or more. It all depends on the cost of the horse, cost of training bill and other misc cost. And my advice is that every single detail needs to be written out prior to moving ahead with this plan. This can be fun too. But not much control as part owner. People have different wants and needs, so not many partnership last due to lack of planning prior to starting one. Normally the team of this syndicate will appoint a manager. This can be good if you have good, fair and experience managers.

How to buy the horse? There are a few types of horse you can buy and many sources from. If you have got no idea of a good looking horse, no idea if he looks small or big and tough. If you cannot differentiate horses physical appearance – do not worry, many people who owns horses simply don’t care too much about understanding horses as they have got a special skill in leverage on other people expertise. You can be like them; too they ask trainers, bloodstock’s agent, friends or other experience horse owners for advice. The most important starting point here, you have to decide how much you money you want to spend in buying a horse. THE 4 TYPES OF THOROUGHBRED HORSES YOU CAN BUY FOR SINGAPORE RACING.

rog-winner-13-05-2016

  1. RACED HORSES -You can start by buying raced horses. There are many advantages in doing so. I was lucky to have known many horsemen in the industry. At times they will highlight to me horses which are still having the ability to win races that is available for sale. Inspections will be carried out to see if the legs are good and the horse of good health. In buying raced horses, these are the few important physical conditions of the horse you need to give thorough inspection.

I will also look at the number of starts and how this horses fair. Buying raced horses can be fun as long as you are not looking to own champion. Why I recommend buying raced horses? It is the most economical in term of time and dollars. As you can already know the level of each horse based on its record of performance to date in Singapore. As long as you don’t expect a miracle from a Class 4 or Class 5 horse to be champions and cup winning horse, you won’t be disappointed. You get what you pay for. Current market price for a 4 years old horse can cost you as low as $15,000 for a mediocre record of performance to some better ones that may cost up to maximum $40,000.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED x TULLUMAYO 2015 as a yearling

  1. YEARLING HORSES: If you are looking for untested horses, then yearlings is the way to go. I have my personal experience buying from NZ or Australia but never had any from other countries. Yearlings are one year olds. These young horses can cost from around $10,000 to $100,000 or some can cost much more. Horses like this can never have any guarantee, some got injured or get ill and in some case the horse did not even run a single race at all. Buying are based on pedigree, conformation and size. The better the family bloodline of a yearling, the most likely the price is higher. It is common in NZ and Australia a good pedigree horse can cost more than $500,000.

  1. READY TO RUN 2 YEARS OLD SALES – In the New Zealand, The ready to run 2 years old sales held annually with about 450 horses will be auctioned. On-line ‘Live telecast’ footage of the sales available. 1 month prior to the sales, pedigrees, photos and videos of these horses were available for prospective buyers. These horses are really young, have never raced before, and videos of them doing a 200meters gallops were shown. These sales average upto NZD80,000 there about. The Australian 2 years old ready to race sales is averaging much higher as they have different levels in the pedigree of horses in the sales. To me it is important to note that physical inspection is necessary if you like to buy from these sources. I have some friends in New Zealand that is very helpful and of course with wide knowledge and rich in experience with horse purchases. If I could make the time, I will normally do a joint inspection and selection of horses that is available for sales. The locals have more insider information and that is another important point to note. They may know some history of the horses that was on sale and may give good assessment pointers. This kind of sales is interesting and should you have the luck, you may buy yourself good horses at reasonable price.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED 3yo Trial Winner for sale

  1. TRIAL WINNERS OR PLACED – Trial Winners or Placed Horses. Trial Winners can cost from NZD$70,000 to more than NZD$100,000. Trial placed horses (2nd or 3rd placing) can be purchased at around NZD$50,000. These are normally private sales and this is one of my favourite way of buying racehorses for Singapore racing. These horses are normally trained and prepared for the local racing. As generally the stakes money can be lower than Singapore and owners of trial winners may sell their horses should he been offered a reasonable price. These horses are the best way of buying racehorse due to few reasons I listed here:
  • You save money and time – training a race horse to run his first race or doing his barrier trial may take several months. Many got injured during the preparation and ended to no value.
  • He knows what racing is all about – Trials winners or placed horses have shown his indicative market value during the trials. A good trial winner horses will definitely be at a higher selling price. You get what you pay for. You can also see how these behave at the barrier, and you don’t want to own horses that are barrier fear.
  • All you need is for these horses to acclimatised to the Singapore weather – After the purchase, you can almost immediately (6 weeks) fly him here in Singapore. The total cost of Pre Purchase Veterinary Examination, Insurance, Airfreight and Agistment for horses to be import to Singapore is around SGD 14,500 to $16,000 – price range depends on few factors like fuel price, type of vet examination you required and Class of insurance coverage.
  • You can normally see him racing here in Singapore in about 4 months to 6 months from your purchase. It also depends on the trainers at the NZ connections and if they keep him fit while waiting for the flight to bring him here you can even see him racing a few weeks faster. Anyway that is not the only factor, as horses are also exposed to other health issues and risk during travelling and training here.

OWNING RACE HORSE/S can be fun, exciting and sometimes profitable. Not all horses can win races but some can’t stop winning. This requires LUCK, skill, connections and many other important keys to be a successful race horse owner. Each individual have their own reasons to own horses and what ever it may be, this requires a lot of consideration especially the monthly training bills and is a long term commitment.

Some horse owners take this as an investment and expect high return from it’s investment and some do became successful owners. Some horse may cost around $50,000 and made 5 times in stakes money earned in 2 years or so.

If you need to  buy trial winners or placed, do not hesitate to give me a call or simply register yourself here and I will be contacting you. Looking forward to a successful friendship in horse racing and growing the thoroughbred horse population in Singapore.
